Roque Leonardy born in Modena, Italy Son of Don Giovanni Bonelly and Jacoba Anchoni Agueda Coll born Daughter of Bartolome Coll and Josepha Ponz British assume rule of East Florida. Roque Leonardy is recruited for Dr Andrew Turnbull's colony to colonize East Florida. After several months gathering in Mahon, Minorca, Leonardy marries a local girl, Esperanza Balle. The expedition arrives in Les Mosquitos in June, 1768. Two daughters Jacoma and Maria are born to the Leonardys in New Smryna, Florida, between 1771-74. Neither survived more than ten years--Maria probably died an infant. Esperanza Balle dies. Roque Leonardy marries Agueda Coll Chato, the widow of Juan Castellvell, who has a small son Juan, 3. Daughter Josefa Clorinda is born. She is the first of eleven children born to between 1775-1791. At least six of these children die in infancy. After nine years of abuse and neglect, the Turnbull colony disbands. 700 of the original 1400 immigrants survie, and walk 70 miles north on the Kings Road to Saint Augustine where they are accepted by the British governor. Spanish return to rule in East Florida. Saint Augustine census lists Roque Leonardy as a wine merchant with two and a half acres and two houses, one that he lives in by the barracks. He has a wife, three children, five slaves, horses and three cows. He is a lieutenant on the city militia and is addressed as Don. The census counts Don Roque Leonardy as the owner of fifty acres, four houses, twelve horses, and a shop in the city. He lives on Hospital Street. Don Roque Leonardy's address is 6a Calle Trabiesa. Don Roque Leonardy drowns. Agueda Coll marries Juan Bernard Sanchez. Son Bartolome Leonardy marries Antonia Paula Bonelly. Agueda Coll dies. |
